Shrink ratio 3:1
In our assortment, you will find various types of heat shrink tubing with different shrink ratios. The shrink ratio indicates how much the tubing shrinks in diameter when heated. Each type of heat shrink tubing has a fixed shrink ratio, regardless of its size or packaging form. Here, you can discover all our heat shrink tubing with a 3:1 shrink ratio.
What does the shrink ratio of heat shrink tubing mean?
The shrink ratio shows how much heat shrink tubing reduces in diameter when heated. If heat shrink tubing has a 3:1 shrink ratio, this means that its original inner diameter is three times larger than its inner diameter after full shrinkage.
The product specifications for heat shrink tubing often list the "inner diameter as supplied" and the "inner diameter after shrinkage." The shrink ratio determines how the inner diameter after shrinkage compares to the original inner diameter.
What shrink ratios are available?
Using heat shrink tubing with a 3:1 shrink ratio
Heat shrink tubing with a 3:1 shrink ratio is ideal for applications where a greater variation in cable diameters is needed. This type of heat shrink tubing adapts well and provides a strong seal, even for irregular shapes. Follow these steps for proper use:
1. Measure the diameter of the cable on which you want to apply the heat shrink tubing and determine the required length.
2. Choose the right type of heat shrink tubing based on your application. Should the tubing be extra flexible, self-extinguishing, or adhesive-lined for a waterproof seal?
3. Select the correct tubing diameter. Choose a heat shrink tubing with an inner diameter after full shrinkage that is slightly smaller than the cable’s diameter.
4. For a cable with a diameter of 14 millimeters, for example, choose a heat shrink tubing with an inner diameter after shrinkage of 13 millimeters. With a 3:1 shrink ratio, this tubing has an inner diameter as supplied of approximately 39 millimeters.
5. Cut the tubing to the appropriate length, slide it over the cable, and heat it with a heat gun or soldering iron.
After heating, the heat shrink tubing shrinks tightly around the cable, ensuring optimal protection against external influences.
