Shrink ratio 2:1

In our assortment, you will find not only different types of heat shrink tubing but also various shrink ratios. Each type of heat shrink tubing has a fixed shrink ratio (which does not vary per size or packaging form) that indicates how much the tubing shrinks in diameter when heated. Check out all our heat shrink tubing types with a 2:1 shrink ratio here.

What does the shrink ratio of heat shrink tubing mean?

The shrink ratio indicates the proportion by which heat shrink tubing shrinks in diameter when heated. If a heat shrink tube has a shrink ratio of 2:1, its diameter will be half the original diameter once fully heated and shrunk.

When looking at the properties of a specific type of heat shrink tubing, you will find specifications for the 'inner diameter as supplied' and the 'inner diameter after shrinkage.' The shrink ratio defines how the post-shrink inner diameter relates to the pre-shrink inner diameter.

What shrink ratios are available?

We offer heat shrink tubing in the following shrink ratios:

Using heat shrink tubing with a 2:1 shrink ratio

When using heat shrink tubing with a 2:1 shrink ratio, follow these steps:

  1. Measure the diameter of the cable you intend to cover with the heat shrink tubing. Also, measure the required tubing length.
  2. Select the right type of heat shrink tubing based on your specific application. Does it need to be self-extinguishing? Should it be flexible, or is enhanced protection the priority?
  3. Determine the required tubing diameter. Choose heat shrink tubing with an inner diameter after shrinkage that is slightly smaller than the cable’s diameter. For example, if the cable has a diameter of 5 millimeters, select heat shrink tubing with an inner diameter after shrinkage of 4.8 millimeters. With a 2:1 shrink ratio, this tubing would have an inner diameter of 9.5 millimeters when supplied.
  4. Cut the heat shrink tubing to the correct length, place it over the cable, and heat it using a soldering iron or heat gun.

The heat shrink tubing should now fit tightly and securely around the cable.
