What are the differences between different types of bootlace ferrules?

Posted on 5 August 2021

Insulated versus uninsulated, singular versus TWIN

Bootlace ferrules are available in a wide variaty of types and sizes. In addition, insulated bootlace ferrules have an insulation sleeve which is available in a broad range of colors. What is the difference between the different bootlace ferrule types and colours? Read it in this blog!

What are bootlace ferrules?

Bootlace ferrules are copper tubes, used to create an optimal electrical connection between the exposed copper wires of a stripped cable on one side, and the clamp on the other side, which is attached to the bootlace ferrule. Bootlace ferrules are used for situations in which the cable reaches an end point.

Different types of bootlace ferrules: Insulated versus uninsulated

Bootlace ferrules are available in two types, when it comes to insulation: insulated and uninsulated. Insulated bootlace ferrules can easily be recognized: they have a coloured insulation sleeve, which is attached to the copper tube. The colour of the insulation sleeve has no particular meaning – other than making the bootlace ferrule easy to spot and recognize. Since bootlace ferrules are available with sleeves in a broad range of colours, these sleeve can be used to mark bootlace ferrules.

Uninsulated bootlace ferrules do not have the insulation sleeve that insulated bootlace ferrules have, and are therefore a ‘colourless’ copper tube. They do have a similar ‘collar’, in the sense that the end of the copper tube in which the wires should be entered, is slightly funnel shaped.

Different types of bootlace ferrules: Singular versus TWIN / double bootlace ferrules

Insulated bootlace ferrules are available in two types: singular and TWIN, or double bootlace ferrules. The difference between these two types can easily be recognized: TWIN / double bootlace ferrules are wider, beacuse the side with the insulation sleeve in suited for the wires of two cables, instead of just one cable, which is the case with singular bootlace ferrules.
