What are chassis cable ties?

Posted on 17 March 2022

Button head cable ties, sometimes called cable ties for chassis, are one of the many cable tie variants used for a very specific application. They are therefore less known with the general public, but they offer a lot of advantages for specific industries, including the automotive industry. How and for which purposes these cable ties are used? Read it in this blog!

Properties of chassis cable ties

Button head cable ties have standard sizes, with a length of 370 millimeters, a width of 7,6 millimeters and a tensile strength of 65 kilograms. The maximum bundle diameter for which this type of cable tie can be used is 101 millimeters.

In addition, these cable ties are available in two colours: black and natural. Black cable ties are UV resistant and made of the plastic polyamide 6.6. They are therefore resistant to temperatures ranging from -40 °C up to +85 °C. Button head cable ties are halogen free, silicon free and meet the UL 94 V-2 flammability class.

How do you use button head cable ties?

Button head cable ties consist of a round head, in which the lock of the cable tie is located. The 'long part' of the cable tie is attached right-angled to the round head of the cable tie.

These cable ties are, as the name says, used to guide cables along a chassis. This is done by guiding the end of the cable tie through the pre-drilled hole in the chassis, causing the round button head to lie directly on the chassis. Then, make a loop of the end of the cable tie and guide it back up through the hole and through the head of the cable tie and the lock. Guide the cables through the loop that you just created and pull the cable tie, so that the cable(s) is fixated by the cable tie loop. If desired, you can cut the end of the cable tie.
