Cable tie comparison: The right cable tie for your project

Comparison of cable ties: Which cable tie is right for your project?

Posted on 21 November 2024

Cable ties come in a variety of designs and materials to meet a wide range of requirements. In this blog post, we compare different types of cable ties, including stainless steel, reusable, and UV-resistant cable ties.

Stainless steel vs. plastic cable ties

Stainless steel cable ties are the first choice for applications in extreme environmental conditions. They are available in AISI 304 and AISI 316L variants. The latter offers even higher resistance to corrosion and temperature fluctuations, making them ideal for harsh environments like offshore installations and chemical industries.

Advantages of stainless steel cable ties:

Corrosion resistance: AISI 316L, in particular, is resistant to acids and seawater.
Temperature resistance: Stainless steel cable ties can withstand extreme temperatures.
UV resistance: All stainless steel cable ties are naturally UV-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor use.
High tensile strength: A standard stainless steel cable tie has a tensile strength of up to 114 kg, making it a robust option for demanding applications.

In comparison, plastic cable ties are mostly made from polyamide 6.6 or polypropylene. Polypropylene offers excellent chemical resistance and is often used in the chemical industry.

Reusable vs. single-use cable ties

Reusable cable ties offer an eco-friendly alternative to single-use versions. They feature a special locking mechanism that allows the cable tie to be opened and closed multiple times. These cable ties are particularly suitable for temporary installations, such as in trade shows or event setups. Despite their reusable nature, these cable ties are just as strong as conventional ones. A reusable cable tie has a tensile strength of up to 22.2 kg, depending on its width.

UV-resistant cable ties

UV-resistant cable ties are specially designed for outdoor use. UV rays can shorten the lifespan of standard cable ties, but UV-resistant cable ties, typically made from black polyamide 6.6 or polypropylene, offer longer durability. They are resistant to sunlight and generally last several years outdoors. For more extreme conditions, where chemical resistance is also required, Tefzel® or stainless steel cable ties are the right choice. Tefzel® cable ties can withstand temperatures of up to 150 °C and extreme chemical conditions.

Conclusion

The choice of the right cable tie depends on the specific application. Stainless steel cable ties provide the highest resistance and durability in extreme conditions, while reusable cable ties offer practical and eco-friendly solutions for temporary installations. UV-resistant cable ties are essential for any outdoor application to ensure a long-lasting installation.
